Cloth or Not to Cloth

I am really wanting to use cloth diapers. I have read a lot about it lately. Besides the obvious environmental advantages, cloth diapers are non-toxic making them better for your baby's bum bum. They are also pretty affordable in that you can use them for more than one child and once you have them, you don't have to fork out extra money. The problem is, whenever I read of cloth diapers I read of the benefits in theory but don't know many people who have actually used them and can attest to their benefits. I have asked my one good girlfriend (who uses a service) how she feels and she seems a little disappointed in their effectiveness at keeping baby Pooh dry. I want your opinion. From those who have recently used cloth diapers. How do they work for you? Do you find them extra leaky? How many times a day are you changing your child? Please let me know. This is the one thing that I can prepare in advance so I would love to get started. Thanks friends!

Hi there, I am a new member on the canadiansadoptingzambia Yahoo group, so I thought I would check out some of the blogs. My daughter absolutely had to be in cloth diaper b/c she got horrible rashes from something (fragrence??) in the disposables. We had planned on doing cloth anyway but had newborn disposables for the first month or so. She was sometimes wet when I changed her but with 2 padded cloth liners it was ok. I think the other type can actually be too drying as it takes the natural moisture right out of the skin. She did better occasionally being a little wet (damp) than with the chemicals in the others. We just made sure to air her out frequently. Probably changed her every 3 hrs or so throughout the day and at night whenever she woke up. I did not wake her to change her so if she slept for a long time the diaper was pretty wet but the liners wick the moisture away from the skin (mostly). We used Kooshies diapers with 2-3 cloth liners(3 for overnight) and a Kooshies plasic overpant with velcro sides. Once they are eating and the poos are really bad they have disposable liners that you flush with the solid waste. That really helps with cleanup. I washed my own with detergent, hot water and vinegar and hung to dry in the sun as often as I could. Nothing like sunshine to brighten and kill bacteria. Hope this helps:)

Hey andrea. Personally i tried cloth for a very short time with jorja... they didnt work for us. she leaked everywhere, and got major bum rashes. Now maybe i didnt give it long enough but at least we tried it.lol
Now i do know a lady who swears by them she used them with both of her girls and loved them all the way. but for me it was huggies only... pampers has too much baby powder in them they got even worse rashes from those. But I think your baby girl will be the only one who will truly be able to answer this question for you. Her body and skin type (sensitivity i mean), her strength of unine (sounds funny i know) but its true i think will determine it for you!.......
there are you happy i posted a comment.lol.... KEEP US POSTED... Im ALWAYS LOOKING FOR THAT GOOD NEWS!
love you guys!

Hi, this is Erin Russell, my husband and I were originally planning on adopting from Zambia-my cousin in Zambian, but we decided to go with the US for now and see how you first timers do!
I used cloth with both my girls up until about 6 months when the diapers started getting grosser from solid food. I put them in disposables through the night (huggies are definatly better than pampers!) I found I got kind of lazy and they would not get to the washing machine as quickly as they should and well lets just say I wasted a few good cloth diapers!
I would highly recommend trying them at least I really liked how well they worked and like sara said the liners make a big differnce. Just make sure you are washing them without chemical detergent otherwise you are pretty much defeating the purpose!
hope that helped and you are welcome to check out my blog!
blessings on you adoption

Hello!

Got your link through a friend.

We use cloth diapers on our son and they work good. I do not use a service, I just wash them myself.

I chose to go with an all in one (kushies) because the idea would be easier to sell to my husband if there weren't so many pieces to put together.

While my cloth experience has been mostly positive, smushy poops are crappy to clean - really crappy (no pun intended). Some suggest putting a paper liner in, but it just comfortable for my son.

We only keep 10 diapers on hand at a time and it seems to be a perfect number for us. I find we use 5 a day and they can only sit in the bucket for 2 days, so any more would be just a waste.

Good luck with your research. You are more than welcome to e-mail me if you need more info.

Hey Andrea,

My good friend has a website called www.growingyourbaby.com and has covered cloth diapers on there. She has used them on her son for a while now and they seem to work just fine.
